SUV knocks ambulance off road in Forsyth County

Posted: Updated:
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

Officials are urging drivers to be aware of their surroundings after an accident involving an ambulance in Forsyth County.

An ambulance was hit by an SUV on Canton Highway on Monday morning when the driver of the SUV unexpectedly turned left. A dash camera of a Forsyth County Sheriff's Office squad car recorded the crash.

"Everyone, prior to this, were pretty much stopped letting the ambulance come through," said Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Deputy Doug Rainwater.

The driver apparently didn't see the lights of hear the sirens of the ambulance or the squad car. Now he's a facing a misdemeanor charge.

"It's a lot of noise, so that's one reason the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle. Not just one siren was sounding -- but also two," said Rainwater.

A concrete culvert apparently stopped the ambulance from flipping over into the ditch.

"The ambulance crew had two onboard: an EMT and a paramedic," said Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers. "They're both fine, no injuries whatsoever. The civilian vehicle had two onboard: a driver and a passenger. They as well are both fine."

Shivers and Rainwater hope the video reminds motorist to be aware of emergency responders.

"Turn the radio down, get off the cell phone and think about what may be about to occur," Shivers said.

Rainwater added, "Just pay attention, so when you're driving you know when a big red and white ambulance is coming up from behind or a patrol car. It's your responsibility."

Shivers said the ambulance and squad car were responding to a call involving a juvenile who needed medical attention.  He said a fire truck that had already responded to the scene gave that victim proper attention.
