Fund helps Atlanta officers get life insurance

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

They put their lives on the line everyday they go to work and yet many Atlanta Police officers don't have life insurance. Saturday, a Buckhead church raised money to help change that for more men and women in blue.

Peachtree Presbyterian held a car show to help pay for policies for every police officer in the city. The church along with the Atlanta Police Foundation set up the fund seven years ago after the death of Officer Mark Cross.

The city does offer a small policy, but not every officer buys into it. The fund established gives each of the nearly 1,700 officers a $100,000 life insurance policy.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner tells FOX 5 News that the policies actually help the department recruit and retain officers.
