2 licenses for Hawaii woman with super long last name

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

A Hawaii woman has carried two driver's licenses for the last twenty years because her last name, ringing in at 36 letters long, takes up so much space.

Janice Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele's last name exceeds the number of characters allowed on a driver's license, so the state drops the 36th letter of her last name and doesn't print her first or middle name. She carries around her old license with her first and middle name in case any problems arise, which she says isn't uncommon.

It's created a number of problems from not being able to travel, to being questioned by police during a traffic stop.

Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele says people have suggested she change her name, or use her maiden name, but that's something she is not interested in doing because it would mean giving up the one thing she still has from her deceased husband.

The Department of Transportation says it's aware of the issue and is working to extend the name limit to 40 characters.

Good luck, Fox 2 Nation, trying to figure out the pronunciation.
