GLENVIEW, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A mother and her son were rescued from a Glenview high-rise overnight after a small but intense blaze in a ninth-floor apartment.

Heavy flames could be seen shooting from the ninth-floor apartment at 3925 Triumvera Drive before the two people scrambled down a 100-foot ladder.

The fire was first reported at 12:27 a.m., Glenview Fire Chief Wayne Globerger said.

"I was like ‘I have to be alive, I have to be safe. I have to do what the fire department said,'" said Sungwon Choi, 14. "Survival — that was the only thing on my mind."

A "couple" people suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, Globerger said.

While flames were quickly extinguished, smoke filled the ninth floor and several other residents were evacuated, Globerger said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
