(WJBK) -

In Michigan marriages come with a three day 'waiting period.' If you want to buy certain weapons the wait can be significantly longer. And while those certainly can be major, life-changing choices should those wanting to adorn their bodies with fresh ink or piercings be required to bide their time through a cooling off period?

In Washington D.C. a new regulation is being proposed by the city's Department of Health that would do just that.

65 pages of regulations for tattoo parlors were proposed on Friday including a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. According to the Associated press, the language for body piercings is similar.

Surprisingly tattooing and piercing were unregulated in the District until last year when the D.C. Council passed legislation requiring tattoo artists and body piercers to be licensed. Other rules prohibit the tattooing of anyone under the age of 18 and require operators and artists to be licensed. Still other rules ban the tattooing or piercing of anyone under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Similar laws already exist in Michigan.

But those operating in the D.C. area say a waiting period will unnecessarily hurt their body art business and believe simple regulation is enough.

The proposal's future is far from certain. The public has 30 days to comment before it moves forward to a vote by the D.C. Council.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
