Police investigate attempted child abduction on South Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are investigating a reported child abduction in the Washington Park neighborhood early Friday about a block from a South Side Safe Passage Zone.

Two 5-year-olds and a 6-year-old told school officials they were walking to school in the 5900 block of South Indiana Avenue when a man with a gun wanted them to get inside a white vehicle about 7:30 a.m., police said.

The children gave varying descriptions of the man and the vehicle, police said.

Detectives reviewed surveillance video from a nearby corner store and did not see a man or vehicle matching the descriptions, police said. The video also showed numerous police officers in the area.

The area of the alleged abduction is a block north of a Safe Passage Route for Dulles Elementary.

A Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman said the incident is under investigation, but officials received conflicting reports about the alleged abduction.

Area Central detectives have not verified the claim, but continue to investigate.
