Robbers targeting South Side ATM customers: Alert

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Robbers are targeting people using ATMs in bank lobbies in South Side neighborhoods, police said.

At least one robber shows or implies he has a weapon and takes money by force, according to a community alert from Chicago Police.

The robberies happened in the 8400 block of South Stony Island, the 6900 block of South Ashland, the 800 block of West 87th Street, the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove and the 700 block of East 87th Street, the alert said.

The suspects are described as black men, at least one teen and one man about 50; between 5-foot-6 and 6-foot, and 150-170 pounds. Some of the suspects had braids or dreads, and one wore an LA Clippers jersey, the alert said.

Police advise South Side residents not to use ATMs alone after hours, use an ATM only behind a locked door, and if confronted by an assailant, to remain calm and do as they say.

Anyone with information should contact Area South detectives at (312) 747-8273.
