Cheat Sheet: How to take the stress out of your kids' homework

Posted: Updated:

Homework stresses out a lot of kids, and sometimes even parents. However, it doesn't have to be an emotional burden every night.

Psychologist Kate Eshleman says the first step to taking the stress out of homework is to have a plan and establish a routine right away, so the kids know what expectations are. Some suggested routines:

- Schedule a 'homework hour,' so kids always know when it will be time to do homework
- Set a goal, such as homework will be done by dinner time

Dr. Eshleman says it's also okay to let the kids come home and unwind for a bit, before starting homework right away. Just set a specific time the free time ends, and the homework begins.

She also says it's okay for mom and dad to offer advice on those really big homework assignments.
