CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An off-duty female Chicago police officer was the victim of an attempted sex assault on a Northwest Side bike path.

Police say the assault happened at about 2:45 p.m. on Thursday near Sauganash Park near West Peterson Avenue and North Pulaski Road. The officer was out jogging when a Hispanic man grabbed her.

The officer is recovering from minor injuries she sustained while fighting off the would-be rapist. The man escaped, by riding off on a bicycle.

It's not clear if she had headphones on or not, but police say the attacker rode past the woman and out of sight, and then hid in the wooded area on the east side of the bike trail. When the officer ran by, the man grabbed her and dragged her down a short hill.

An evidence technician took photos at the scene while police searched the area south of there where the attacker fled on his bike.

Police say the off-duty officer scratched her attacker on the face as she fought him off, and workers at a nearby business heard her screams and came to help her.

The attacker is described as a Hispanic man 22-26, about 5-foot-7 and 140-150 pounds with short black hair. He was wearing a gray, short-sleeved T-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information should contact detectives at (312) 744-8200.
