CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A teenage boy was killed in a Thursday afternoon shooting just blocks few blocks from where a man was shot dead Wednesday night in the South Side Avalon Park neighborhood.

The 17-year-old boy was shot about 1 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Avalon Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died about an hour later, authorities said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death, but did not immediately release the boy's name.

Police said the shooting is possibly gang-related.

The shooting happened three blocks from where a 35-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday night.

Dwan Long was in the 82000 block of South Avalon Avenue when two men walked up and one of them opened fire about 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 9:01 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Area South detectives are investigating both shootings.
