CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A teen has been charged with shooting a 19-year-old man Tuesday afternoon, within a block of a Safe Passage route leading to a Humboldt Park elementary school.

The victim was with friends in the 3700 block of West Ohio Street about 5:15 p.m. when they got into a "confrontation" with another group, police said.

Someone in the other group pulled a gun and fired shots, striking the victim in the right leg, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was treated and released.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm and four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, all felonies, police said.

The shooting happened about two hours after school let out on the second day of classes for Chicago Public Schools students, and about a block from a Safe Passage route leading to nearby Laura S. Ward Elementary School.

Ward is a welcoming school for students from Ryerson Elementary, one of 47 CPS elementary schools closed earlier this year.
