CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Officials broke ground on a new CTA Green Line station near McCormick Place on Thursday. They have high hopes for what is expected to be a sleek new gateway that will re-energize the South Loop.

The $50 million project is expected to improve travel to the convention center and give an economic boost to the area around State and Cermak.

The main station will be built on the short side of Cermak with three entrances. It will be sleek and modern with elevators, bike racks, 57 security cameras and enclosed boarding platforms. Mayor Emanuel said it will fill the tracks at McCormick Place - a two-mile stretch.

"I think it will be great," one local told FOX 32 News. "People don't have to walk to 35th or farther to get to Roosevelt. You could be right here in the neighborhood. It will be nice."

"By investing in this public transportation, we unlock the economic value for the City of Chicago," Emanuel said at the groundbreaking, "creating hundreds of thousands of jobs of building it, companies like this, retail space and most importantly also for residents to move here."

This new train station is all part of the mayor's efforts to vitalize McCormick Place and Navy Pier. The project is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2014.
