CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Several Illinois school districts have scheduled early dismissals due to the extreme temperatures this week.

School administrators issued the adjustment because of safety concerns for students and teachers. Many schools have air conditioning systems that don't extend throughout the entire building.

The following districts/areas have modified schedules:

In District 46, Meadowview and Woodview Schools will be operating on a half-day schedule (8 a.m. until 11 a.m.) for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (August 28-30). Morning kindergarten will report on August 28 and August 30. Afternoon kindergarten will report on August 29. All other District 46 schools will be operating as normal.

In Joliet, Oak Valley and Laraway Schools have scheduled early dismissals at 1:15 p.m. all week. All after school activities, including girls' softball and boy's baseball have been canceled as well. Assuming moderate weather conditions next week, these schools will resume full school days beginning September 3, following the Labor Day holiday on September 2.

The National Weather Service says a prolonged heat wave of this magnitude is unusual for this time of year, but not unprecedented.
