Fire danger prompts ban of sky lanterns in Illinois

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Sky lanterns look pretty, but officials say they carry a big fire risk. So, Illinois has joined the list of states banning them.

The lanterns -- basically mini hot air balloons -- have become more and more popular, but the state fire marshal says since they have to generate a lot of heat to float, they're still dangerously hot when they land.

There's also a concern about the floating lanterns being sucked into airplane engines.
