Dionne Miller's `Happenings at Halas' - August 26

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Its the final week of training camp. The roster is already 14 players lighter and a cut day looms at the end of the week. For Brandon Hardin, this is the most important week of his short career. Last year's third round pick spent his rookie season rehabbing from a neck injury. Now, the second year safety is battling just to make the team. But he's hardly alone. There are backup battles all over the roster making the preseason finale a very crucial game in the careers of so many guys at Halas Hall.

Marc Trestman acknowledged "it's tough on everybody." Trestman himself was asked to turn in his play book during his career. And it's never fun.

Rookie Michael Ford told me there's always pressure, so this week may not feel that differently--but Fendi Onobun might disagree. Onobun is in a 3 battle for backup tight end. The coaching staff likes what they've seen in practice, but inconsistent game performances have him balancing on the bubble when it comes to making the 53 man roster. He's a former basketball player and is still "learning" the game, but time is running out to prove that you deserve the investment.

Ford has put together solid performances in the absence of injured Armando Allan but wonders if its enough.

"It's a humbling experience," Ford said, adding that there is always pressure to perform, you've just got to stay focused. Not easy to do. Martellus Bennett said that's what's getting in Fendi's way. "He's pressing a little too much....trying way too hard."

Bennett and Onobun spent four hours talking Saturday morning trying to get the young tight end to relax and just let the game come to him. Bennett was happy to help and understands cut day isn't easy, but its part of the business.

The back up battles are definitely 'what to watch' in the preseason finale, because Trestman made it clear the hope is that most, if not all of the starters will be spectators on Thursday night against Cleveland. Giving them 4 full days of rest before they begin game planning for Cincinnati in week one.

INJURY UPDATE:

Finally some good news to report on the Injury front. DJ Williams was able to do some running. Though not sure how far his conditioning has fallen off in his near month of no practice. Henry Melton ran on Monday and will do so Tuesday and Wednesday and with no recurring concussion symptoms, could be ready to go in week 1.

Patrick Mannelly also began to participate in a few activities.

Others not participating- Jonathan Scott, Corey Irvin, Earl Bennett, Zach Bowman.
