ZION, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Zion police have ceased their search for the remains of a 5-month-old boy allegedly killed by his mother's boyfriend.

Demetries Thorpe, 26, was ordered held on $5 million bail Saturday after he was charged with killing 5-month-old Joshua Summaries.

Thorpe, of Zion, is accused of killing his girlfriend's son, whose disappearance earlier this week spurred a huge police search for the little boy, involving dozens of officers.

Zion police called off their search of the Advanced Disposal Landfill in Zion about 5:30 p.m. Sunday after the area of the landfill that was thought to contain Joshua's remains was cleared, according to a statement issued by Zion police.

Thorpe allegedly placed his hand over the mouth of the little boy when the boy was crying. Eventually, Joshua stopped breathing, authorities said.

Thorpe put the child into a backpack and dropped the child into a nearby Dumpster. There is video surveillance showing Thorpe heading to the Dumpster with a backpack and returning without it.

When confronted by the child's mother, Thorpe allegedly lied and told her the child had been abducted.

Police said Thorpe confessed to what happened while he was questioned over two days.

Officers continue to search for the boy's body at the Advanced Disposal Landfill in Zion.
