First West Nile case of 2013 reported in Illinois

MCHENRY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The first human case of West Nile virus of the year has been reported in Illinois.

The Fox River Grove woman, in her 50s, was not hospitalized and has since recovered, according to a release from the McHenry County Department of Health.

In 2012, the state health department recorded 290 human cases of West Nile Virus, including two deaths, the release said. Three people died of West Nile Virus in Illinois in 2011.

The symptoms of the virus are usually mild and include fever, headache and body aches, but serious illnesses are possible.

The health department advises people to avoid West Nile virus by limiting time outside from dusk to dawn, using bug repellent, wearing protective clothing, and getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes will breed.
