Pike Nurseries: Container Gardens for Grilling

Posted: Updated:

Container gardens are just as unique and diverse as gardens. Today we are going to plant a container garden filled with herbs that you can use while you're grilling this fall.

  • The Key to Container Garden Success
    • Drainage
      • Make sure you pot or container has a hole in the bottom
      • If not, create adequate drainage by adding a good layer of rock
        • We also recommend using some charcoal at the bottom of the container to soak up any extra water
    • Soil
      • Use a good quality potting mix in containers…not a planting mix
      • Pike Potting & Container Soil is light and nutrient rich, which is essential for container gardens
  • Planting a Herb Container Garden
    • Fill your pot about 3/4 full with Pike Potting Soil
    • Select the herbs you love and plant them in the pot
      • Rosemary
        • One of the most popular herbs
        • Perennial plant that is evergreen year-round
        • Grilling Use
          • Pick some rosemary, cut it up and mix it right into your burgers
      • Sage
        • Sage is a great plant with foliage color
        • Choose from green varieties or add in tri-colored sage to give your container garden more color
        • Grilling Use
          • Sage pairs well with poultry
          • If roasting a whole chicken, stuff rosemary inside the chicken
          • For juicy chicken breast, take a piece of tin foil, spray with a non-stick cooking spray. Place your chicken on a piece of tin foil and add sage and slice of lemon. Fold the tinfoil around the chicken breast and place directly on the grill
      • Thyme
        • Thyme is extremely fragrant and comes in many different varieties, like lemon thyme or wooly thyme
        • Grill Use
          • Use with chicken and vegetables
    • Fill in around the plants with more Pike Potting soil and firmly tap the soil to remove air pockets
    • Sprinkle EB Stone Sure Start around the plants and gently work into the soil
    • Water thoroughly
    • Place the container in a sunny spot and remember to snip your herbs while your grilling or cooking
  • This Weekend at Pike Nurseries
    • Free Container Gardens for Grilling Class
    • Saturday, August 24th at 10am
    • After the class, plant your own grilling container garden
