Nationals get OF DeJesus in trade with Cubs

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder David DeJesus in a trade with the Chicago Cubs.

The deal bolsters Washington's bench as it tries to make an improbable late run for a playoff spot. Coming into the day, the Nationals trailed Cincinnati by 9 1/2 games for the NL's second wild-card slot.

The Cubs receive a player to be named in the deal. They also save about $2.5 million, including $1.5 million to buy out a 2014 option for $6.5 million.

The 33-year DeJesus is batting .250 with six homers and 27 RBIs in 84 games. He didn't have to go far to join his new team, with Washington opening a four-game series at Chicago on Monday night.

The Cubs activated outfielder Brian Bogusevic from the 15-day disabled list to take DeJesus' roster spot, while the Nationals released outfielder Roger Bernardina to make room.
