DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Fielder family got a warm Detroit welcome back in January of 2012. Prince Fielder was joining the Detroit Tigers in a deal worth $214 million. It was a once in a lifetime moment for the young family.

"I want to thank my wife, my lovely wife. She means the world to me. She's kept me on track to get here today," Fielder said at that time.

Then this week came word that something might be wrong in the personal life of Prince Fielder when Torii Hunter called into Ryan Ermanni's radio show on Detroit Sports 105.1 to defend his fellow ballplayer's performance.

"Prince is a strong guy. A lot of people don't know what's going on in his life, but this guy's a strong guy. He's out there every day. He won't come out of the lineup no matter what's going on off the field, on the field," Hunter said.

Off the field, we now know Prince Fielder has filed for divorce from his wife of eight years, Chanel. It happened back at the end of May in Orange County, Florida where they have a home.

We were unable to reach Prince Fielder for comment at the ballpark, and attorneys representing him and his wife did not return calls.
