Wheeling High School officials believe a tar kettle used in a summer building project may have been the source of a "minor" fire that sent thick, black plumes of smoke above the school Tuesday evening.

Firefighters responded about 4:15 p.m. and contained the fire near the entrance of the building at 900 S. Elmhurst Road. There were no reported injuries, Pioneer Press is reporting.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but Principal Angela Sisi said in statement released Tuesday evening that it is believed the tar kettle was parked by the main entrance of the building when it caught on fire and spread to the building.

While school officials work with the fire department to assess the damage, Sisi said she does not anticipate the incident will impact the start of school.

"While this is an unfortunate situation, we are grateful that no one was hurt," she said in the statement. "We will share additional information as we learn more."
