GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The SWAT officers who carried out a dramatic rescue of Gwinnett County firefighters talked to FOX 5 about their ordeal.

Sgt. Jeff Johnston, Officer Nick Boney and Sgt. Jason Teague were members of the Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT team called to a Suwanee home on April 10 after the homeowner held several firefighters hostage.

The suspect, Lauren Brown, called 911 claiming he was ill, according to authorities. He then took four of the first-responders hostage when they arrived at the home.

After more than three hours of negotiation, Johnson, Boney and Teague moved in, shooting and killing Brown when it became clear the 55-year-old man wouldn't release the hostages.

Conditions inside the home made the situation even more dangerous for the SWAT team members.

"The degree of smoke and debris that was in the room was something that nobody could have planned for," Boney said. "But when you put the skills of our team in a situation like that, we are still going to fight through it and make sure that we finish the mission."

Teague was shot during the shootout with Brown. He is expected to make a full recovery and has high praise for the Gwinnett Police Department and SWAT team members.

"If training and just protocol…and the way we conduct business - if that had not been tested and tested and tested and practiced and rehearsed, we would not have been successful as were," Teague said.

Teague underwent a bone graft to repair the damage to his arm in June. It's estimated that he would have four to five months for recovery and rehabilitation.
