Victor Hill won't testify in his corruption trial

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill will not take the stand in his corruption trial.

Both the prosecution and the defense have rested their cases, and the jury is expected to begin deliberating on Wednesday.

Hill is accused of using his office and equipment for personal and financial gain. The state says Hill stole from taxpayers during his first term in office when he allegedly abused the use of county vehicles, credit cards and employees.

The defense called two witnesses on Tuesday before resting its case.

The first witness for the defense was an investigator who told jurors he was ordered by higher-ups to follow Hill in 2011 before Hill became a candidate for sheriff.

The second witness was an internal affairs expert who said that 11 investigators from the sheriff's office spent 48 weeks and more than in $400,000 in salary and county gas investigating Hill.

The defense has questioned the timing of this case, saying the issues actually came up in 2008 but that Hill was not indicted until three years later when his political rival did not want him to run for office again.

Hill lost the 2008 election to Kem Kimbrough, but was re-elected as Clayton County sheriff in 2012.

Hill told the judge on Tuesday that he will not testify in the trial.

One charge -- influencing a witness was dropped  -- was dropped against Hill on Wednesday.

Closing arguments are set to begin on Wednesday morning.
