A Cook County Jail correctional officer has been charged with murder after the fatal shooting of a motorist Thursday near Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. at Indianapolis Boulevard and Casino Center Drive, Hammond police said.

The county officer, Edgar Singleton, Jr., allegedly fired his weapon after a dispute with a fellow motorist, according to a statement from the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Montrell Moss, 23, of the 3800 block of Butternut Street in East Chicago, Ind. was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. at St. Margaret Mercy in Hammond, Ind., according to the Lake County (Ind.) Coroner's office.

Moss suffered a gunshot wound and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the coroner's office.

Singleton has been charged with murder and has been de-deputized, said the sheriff's office, which said it is also in the process of terminating his employment.

Hammond police are investigating but would not release further details Sunday.
