Woman in desperate straits finds $4K in cash – and returns it

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

We've all heard the phrase "finders keepers, losers weepers," but what would you do if you found a stack of cash in an unmarked envelope?

27-year-old Shannon Baker was faced with that decision. Two days after her birthday, Baker found $4,000 in cash in a Merrillville parking lot after shopping for prenatal vitamins.

Even though she had every reason to keep the money—including being unemployed with a new baby on the way---she decided to turn it in.

"I was walking across the parking lot and I slipped and when I looked down, it just looked like a piece of paper so I was thinking I'm going to pick it up and throw it away," she recalls. "When I picked it up, I realized it wasn't just a piece of paper it was an envelope and it wasn't an empty envelope it, it was a full envelope so I opened it and I looked inside and I was like, wow."

At the time, Baker was nine months pregnant and unemployed after working as a server, living in a Crown Point home with her parents, husband, brother and 7-year-old daughter - a child who was with her when she found the stack of cash.

"What do you do? It's a miracle," Baker says of finding the money. "You find $4,000 just sitting on the side of the street. For me, it was to teach my daughter honesty and morally showing what I was taught growing up, to be honest about what you do."

Baker turned the money into police who contacted The Times newspaper about the stash of cash. The woman who lost the money contacted police and provided the exact amount and denomination of the bills, along with a receipt and plenty of gratitude.

"She said how grateful she was, told me thank you, gave me a hug with a little bit of a reward in it," Baker says.

Shannon Baker says police told her if she hadn't turned in the money, she wouldn't have been in trouble but she says it was important to do the right thing - especially since her little one was watching.
