The Talker: Study finds most people don`t know their neighbors

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A survey in Britain found there's a bit of tension between residents and their neighbors.

The poll found that a quarter of people don't know any of the names of the neighbors on each side of them.

Here are the rest of the results:

  • 60 percent never speak to their neighbors.
  • 28 percent said they would never socialize with their neighbors.
  • 46 percent said when they cross paths with certain people who live nearby, they look the other way.
  • 10 percent said, in the same situation, they give the neighbor a "frosty look."
  • 25 percent say they avoid going in their backyards in order to avoid having to make chit-chat over the fence.
  • Two-thirds of people said they would not dream of leaving their house key with one of their neighbors.

The poll also looked at what's behind the tension.

  • 10 percent of people said they have a long-running feud with a neighbor that's lasted more than four years. The most common reason given: the neighbor did something to block their driveway.
  • Another 10 percent said they don't talk with their neighbors because they don't like how the neighbors look.
  • 10 percent also said at least once, they have moved in order to get away from certain neighbors.
