Plans set for Ga. 400 toll plaza removal

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The toll plaza on Georgia 400 will be soon become a thing of the past.  On Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced a $3.5 million contract to demolish the plaza.

GDOT Commissioner Keith Golden said that some work to take down the toll booths could begin as early as October.

Golden says the goal is to stop collecting tolls on the 400 the week before the Thanksgiving holiday, much to the delight of some drivers.

"I hate the tolls. I'm ready to be able to just drive right through there," said Chad Porter.

Some people who drive the 400 are concerned that demolishing the toll plaza will cause traffic backups.

"Oh, I'd like to see it be done when the traffic isn't bad, when it's not in peak hours. That'd be great," Porter said.

Commissioner Golden says not to worry.

"Most of the work will be done at night, and outside of what you would call the actual construction and general purpose lanes. So, the work should have very minimal impact on the public," Golden said.

Tearing down the toll plaza means a loss of about $21 million a year for the state. Down the road, tolls could return to Ga. 400 in the form of additional managed lanes.

"It would be a tolling mechanism to control traffic. There'd be two new additional lanes in each direction," Golden said.

GDOT officials say, weather permitting, they'll stop collecting tolls on Ga. 400 on Thursday, Nov. 21.
