Talker: Michigan woman battling MS wants to end life to donate organs
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
43-year-old Sherri Muzher lives in Michigan and wants to be allowed to commit suicide. Muzher is coping with the late stages of multiple sclerosis.
Her symptoms are especially debilitating. She's had to stay inside her home for the past eleven years. Her brain chronically gets lesion, she's lost her voice, and her lungs are decimated.
She describes her quality of life as "pretty bad" but none of that is the main reason she wants to die. Muzher wants to die so she can help others live a high quality of life. She wants to die so that she can donate her organs; most of which are still healthy.
Assisted suicide is illegal in Michigan—the old home of Jack Kervorkian--and 45 other states.
One medical ethicist says he believes in assisted suicide but doing it for organ donation could be a dangerous precedent and could lead to people being pressured to do it.
