MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Maple Grove man who told FOX 9 News he was responsible for the repeated egging of a nearby church has now been charged with bias-motivated, third-degree damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Lonny Roseland, 45, could face a maximum sentence of one year and three months in prison and up to $4,000 in fines if convicted of both the gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charge.

The charges follow multiple incidences of vandalism at Pilgrims United Church of Christ between June 2 and July 28. Each time, eggs were thrown at the front of the building and several messages were scrawled near the entrance.

The first incident was reported at about 9:35 a.m. on June 2, and responding officers found egg shells all over the windows and door. Two messages were also left on either side of the entrance which read "Church of Sodom" and "Church of Gomorrah Lev 18:2." The pastor told detectives that Bible verse is meant to be against homosexuals.

A week later, an officer conducting an extra patrol at the church spotted a second act of vandalism with more writing that read "Romans 1:26-28."

The third report came on June 30 at 9:39 a.m. after a carton of raw eggs was thrown at the church and metal handcuffs were placed on the main entrance, blocking access to the building. The vandal had also used either a black crayon or grease marker to write, "Gay Pride? No! Shameful Sodomites! Jude 7. Love cult! Matt 7:21-23."

Anticipating further acts of vandalism, the Maple Grove Police Department installed a camera on the outside of the building on July 26. Just two days later, more eggs were thrown and a new message was left -- but this time, the camera caught images of a man in a wheelchair committing the crime.

Police released the video and asked the public for tips in the case while officers canvassed the nearby neighborhood. A tip led officers to Lonny Roseland's home.

Once inside, Roseland admitted using eggs and colored crayons to vandalize the church because he believes it is a cult for supporting same-sex marriage, the criminal complaint states.

The criminal complaint further accuses Roseland of stating that he has a bias toward gay marriage, the United Church of Christ, and that he believes gay people should stay in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and in the closet.

Roseland was charged by summons and is not in custody.
