Falcons fans rise up at Friday Night Lights scrimmage

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Thousands of Atlanta Falcons fans filed into Gainesville's City Park Stadium on Friday to get a sneak preview of the team well before the start of the season.

The Falcons held its annual "Friday Night Lights" intrasquad scrimmage in front of an overflow crowd of more than 14,000 fans.

Many were like Steven Delong, proud to have the Falcons Friday Night Lights in their hometown.

"I've always been a big fan my whole life, and them being in our backyard and coming to see them -- especially for free -- it's awesome," Delong said.

The rare chance to get close to the Falcons is the reason Banks County High football coach Scott Frederick brought 30 of his players to the practice.

"The younger kids especially, I'm talking the freshmen and the sophomores, this is a real, real big deal for them," said Frederick. "A lot of them haven't been to a professional event before, so for them, this is definitely a new experience."

While for some it was a first, for others, the free event was a chance to measure up how the team might be this season.

"We were so close last year, and I believe we can get there again. Just make a couple more plays and I think we've got the team to go all the way," Delong said.

An autograph session and a fireworks show brought an end to a fun night for Falcons fans hoping that this season ends in a Super Bowl.
