A day of skydiving in La Salle County turns into horror as a woman falls to her death, despite her efforts to land safely.
Police say the body of Stephanie Eggum was found in a Dayton Township cornfield Friday.
Investigators say it appears the 32-year-old Elgin woman cut away her main parachute and then deployed her reserve chute. However, she was too close to the ground for it to fully open.
It's unknown why Eggum cut away her main parachute.
As the deadly epidemic spiraled out of control several weeks ago, a young specialist in infectious disease control working at the Illinois Department of Public Health volunteered to fly to the front line of the fight.
