Elderly man dies after driving into Arlington Heights pond

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An elderly man died Thursday morning after he was pulled from an SUV that he had driven into a retention pond in a northwest suburban subdivision.

Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Michael Miljan said witnesses called 911 after 7 a.m. Thursday to report the SUV had driven into a pond behind 1542 Courtland D. with someone inside.

The SUV, driven by 89-year-old Henry E. Laseke of the 1500 block of Courtland, struck a townhouse and an electrical box — starting a fire — before it entered the water about 80-100 feet away, police said.

The first officer on the scene worked with a neighbor to try to rescue the driver, Miljan said, but they were unsuccessful, as were the first firefighters on the scene.

Meanwhile, the 2013 Cadillac SXR continued to sink and was eventually submerged in the water.

A Fire Department dive team arrived, according to Miljan, and was able to pull Laseke from the vehicle after a tow truck pulled the vehicle out of the water. He was taken to Northwest Community Hospital, where he died just before 11 a.m., police said.

No foul play is suspected and police continue to investigate the accident.
