Meijer now open at Gateway Marketplace in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

Midwest retail giant Meijer has opened a new $20 million grocery supercenter in Detroit.

Shoppers turned out early Thursday for the opening, which comes as Detroit seeks to clear billions of dollars of old debt in bankruptcy.

"This is a great opportunity for us in Detroit to have a nice place like this so we don't have to go so far out of town to get to a Meijer," said Gloria Cunningham, who used to travel to Southfield to do her grocery shopping.

The store, located at the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Woodward, is over 190,000-square-feet and features plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, including organic products.

The $72 million Gateway Marketplace project is expected to draw customers from the city and from communities in Oakland and Macomb counties to the north. It follows the opening of a Whole Foods store in the Detroit's growing Midtown area.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer says its new Detroit store has hired about 550 full- and part-time workers.
