WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A north suburban man is behind bars Tuesday after phoning in a bomb threat to a Vernon Hills concert event because a woman he met there did not like him, according to police.

On July 20, Vernon Hills police received a call just after 11 p.m. from a man who claimed to have planted three bombs at the site of the Vernon Hills Summer Celebration in Century Park at Route 60 and Lakeview Parkway.

The caller said the bombs would go off in about 15 minutes, a statement from police said.

Police traced the call to the area of Lakeview Parkway and the EJ&E railroad tracks, about half a mile from the event. They learned it was made from a phone registered to James N. Trelford, 48, of the 100 block of 2nd Street in Libertyville, the statement said.

At about 11:20 p.m., a Vernon Hills police officer found Trelford walking from a trail north of the tracks into the parking lot of a Lowe's store on Route 21, and detained him.

Trelford admitted making the call, but said there were no bombs, according to police, who said he made the call because he was mad that a woman met at the Summer Celebration did not share his affection.

Trelford was charged with three counts of felony disorderly conduct, and appeared in Lake County Court on Sunday, where he was ordered held in the Lake County Jail on a $25,000 bond. His next hearing is July 30.

In the police statement, Chief Mark Fleischhauer credited the quick work of everyone involved.

"We take calls of this nature very seriously. Our primary concern was for the safety of everyone at the Summer Celebration. Quick action and teamwork on the part of our telecommunicators and officers kept this from becoming a very complex investigation."
