Illinois heat wave lingers, but cooler temps loom

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The heat is still blasting Illinois, but the end is in sight.

The National Weather Service says the heat index could climb to 104 degrees on Friday across swaths of northern Illinois. It's expected to feel like 105 degrees near the Quad Cities.

But the dayslong stretch of oppressive weather is giving way this weekend as a cool front brings in more comfortable temperatures.

Most heat advisories for the region expire Friday evening.

The sultry weather has caused problems for some commuters.

Metra officials say trains are running more slowly to ease stress on overheated tracks. And firefighters had to spray down bridges over the Calumet River because the steel was expanding in the heat.
