SNELLVILLE, Ga. -

A Snellville family is raising money for an organization that supports children who need organ transplants. Their 12-year-old son is also in need of a life-saving transplant.

Though only 12, Alan Sims is already a survivor. He beat leukemia three years ago and recently found out that he needs a liver transplant. But Alan is determined to stay active and not let anything slow him down.

Alan's mother, Alida Sims, noticed bumps on his skin when he was just four, but she thought they were insect bites.

"We thought they were ant bites and he had them on his knees and he had them on his elbows, and we found out that he had elevated cholesterol," said Alida Sims.

Alan was diagnosed with hyperlipidemia, a genetic disorder that causes his cholesterol levels to be abnormally high. Doctors said he needed a costly liver transplant.

"Transplants run from $125,000 to $500,000. That's just the window that they give," Alida said.

The Sims found financial and emotional support from the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA), a non-profit that raises money for children who like Alan.

Now they're raising money and awareness for the organization that helps children who need life-saving transplants.

"Like the fundraising that we do, we do it for COTA, and then COTA helps the children like Alan with their transplant related needs that they may have," said Alida Sims.

They've raised $1,000, but their goal is to reach $50,000.

The Sims family is holding its second COTA fundraiser this Saturday in Lawrenceville. For more information about how you can help Alan other children like him, visit: http://www.cotaforalans.com/WaysToHelp
