Firefighter hurt, man in coma after saved from NW Atl fire

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A 59-year-old man remains in a coma hours after Atlanta firefighters rescued him from a raging house fire early Wednesday morning. Authorities say Marvin Jackson was suffering a cardiac arrest when the fire first broke out at his northwest Atlanta home.

Four firefighters suffered burns to their hands, with one of them being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. That firefighter has since been released and his name is not being provided to the public.

"Looking at this house, it's hard to believe somebody lived through it," said Reginad Woodward, Jackson's childhood friend.

The fire broke out about 11:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Northwest Drive on Tuesday. Fire crews from four stations arrived to find flames raging from within the home, giving off intense fire and smoke. They soon learned that there may be a person trapped inside of the residence.

Firefighters managed to get inside of the home for a search-and-rescue operation. Authorities say the man they found inside may have been in cardiac arrest when the fire started.

Asst. Fire Chief Chris Wessels said, "Our crews did a very aggressive interior attack that afforded us the opportunity to find the resident and get him out and start medical treatment so we could get him in route to the hospital to try to give him the best chance possible."

Jackson remains in a coma and critical condition as of 11 a.m.

His childhood friend described Jackson as quite an artist.

Woodward said, "He always carried his brushes and pencils. He'd sit down and sketch. You know, show you sketches."

Authorities are investigating what sparked the fire.
