CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The death Friday of an 8-year-old West Side girl was the result of strangulation and multiple injuries that were from child abuse and neglect and her death has been ruled a homicide, an autopsy has determined.

Gizzell Ford was found dead in her home in the 5200 block of West Adams Street Friday morning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The girl was pronounced dead in her home at 11:15 a.m. Friday.

An autopsy performed on Saturday found that her death was caused by strangulation, with multiple blunt force injuries due to child abuse and child neglect contributing factors, and her death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.

The state Department of Child and Family Services is also investigating the girl's death.

DCFS is investigating the girl's grandmother for possible abuse and neglect of Gizzell and two of her siblings, DCFS spokesman Dave Clarkin said. It is the first time DCFS has had contact with the family.

Area North detectives are also investigating.
