Mell says Metra board should be cleaned out

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The chairman of the House Mass Transit Committee says the Metra board should be cleaned out following allegations of political influence in hiring and contracting.

But Democratic state Rep. Deborah Mell of Chicago says a memo from former Metra CEO Alex Clifford to the board showing resistance to "political patronage politics" doesn't mean House Speaker Michael Madigan did anything wrong.

Mell says Madigan has been forthcoming about his involvement. She wants to talk to Clifford directly to hear more about the accusations detailed in his memo.

Clifford's criticism centers on Metra Chair Brad O'Halloran and Director Larry Huggins. Clifford wrote they wanted him out because he wouldn't accede to politically-backed hiring.

Mell wants to wait until an investigation with the inspector general is finished before her committee acts.
