Activist Adam Kokesh arrested; refused to leave cell for arraignment

HERNDON, Va. -

Anti-government activist (and pro-gun activist) Adam Kokesh remains in the Fairfax County jail, in part, because he is refusing to allow deputies to fingerprint him or to photograph him.

Kokesh also refused to come out of his jail cell to attend a bond hearing in the adjacent courthouse, according to a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

Kokesh was arrested Tuesday evening at his home in Herndon, Va. On July 4th, the activist posted a video showing him loading a shotgun on D.C.'s Freedom Plaza. Displaying a weapon in D.C. is generally illegal. Because the video shows Kokesh handling the shotgun on federal parkland, U.S. Park Police sought and got a search warrant.

According to one of Kokesh's colleagues, the warrant sought the weapon shown in the video. Roommates of Kokesh told reporters a SWAT team of Park Police officers knocked twice, broke through the front door, tossed in a flash grenade, then swarmed into the house and yard.

Residents say they and Kokesh were handcuffed for several hours while officers opened a closet-sized safe in the home's basement. Officers left the house with bags full of gathered evidence, and they arrested Kokesh after finding hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to a charging document.

In the video posted on Independence Day, Kokesh addresses the camera while sliding red shotgun shells into a pump-action weapon: "We will not be silent. We will not obey. We will not allow our government to destroy our humanity."

Supporters say they are not surprised Kokesh is refusing to cooperate while in jail. Darrell Young, who lives in the same house in Herndon where Kokesh was arrested, said, "I don't blame him for resisting a little bit. Because this is not the first time he's been arrested. He's been arrested for dancing! Come on. It's a crime to dance in America? It just shows you what this police state is doing to people. It's horrible."

Kokesh was arrested in 2011 while dancing at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.

Kokesh remains in the Fairfax County Detention Center. If he refuses to attend future bond hearings, it is likely a judge will appoint an attorney to represent the activist.
