Ready to start packing heat? What gun owners should know

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

State police say that in the first year, 300,000 applications are expected for concealed carry licenses, but despite the buzz about concealed carry, it'll probably be six months or so before the first permits are handed out.

Whether you're buying or selling guns, you don't have to wait until then to start getting ready.

A Glock 40-caliber handgun is an idea weapon to carry, concealed on your person – and Barry Soskin of the Article Two Gunshop in Lombard is ready to sell a lot of them.

"This happens to be a 40 caliber; they make the same frame in a 9 millimeter," Soskin says, showing off the handgun. "Today the phone has been ringing, people are still not certain of what exactly today's vote meant."

Nothing happens overnight. State Police have 60 days to lay out what's expected in the mandatory 16 hours of training and 6 months to set up a system of receiving applications.

But if you're planning to get your first gun, there are some things you can do right away. You can apply for a firearms I.D. card, if you don't already have one and take some preliminary classes, including some time on the firing range.

"So when you go into a class that's going to have 40 or 50 people, you have a heads up at least on what's being brought to you," Soskin says.

If you already have a FOID card and a gun, you'll need to go through concealed carry training, and another background check. If you have a concealed carry permit from another state, you need to get a new one here, because Illinois rules are tougher.

And when you carry the weapon, it must be concealed, not on display.

Current gun owners say no problem.

"I think it makes sense, it's gonna be expensive," says gun owner Danny Heer. "I think it's going to cost a lot of money for people who already have the training and whatever else, but I think it's a good idea."

As for the cost of a concealed carry license, it costs $150 for residents and $300 for non-residents. The licenses are good for five years.
