Wrigley Field renovation includes big ads on iconic red clock

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

You're going to see ads in some new places at Wrigley Field, and they're going to be in your face as you watch the Chicago Cubs play ball.

The Friendly Confines, which have been in large measure untouched for many years - and many fans like it that way - is one step closer to major renovation. The project includes putting advertising on the clock outside center field.

The Ricketts family, owners of the Cubs, has been saying from the start that ads are a critical part of the plan to increase revenue at the ballpark. To put a better product on the field, the Ricketts said they have to raise revenue.

The team has already laid out its vision to put large video screens in the outfield that could total 7,000 feet.

Since Wrigley Field is designated a landmark there are some restrictions as to exactly what can or can't be done. But a Cubs spokesman told the Chicago Sun-Times that he is sure things can be done in accordance with the landmark provisions.

Cubs fans that Good Day Chicago spoke with Tuesday morning were divided over drastically altering the iconic red clock.

"I think it needs a facelift. I love it, but I see where they are coming from," one fan said. "But if they took others into account, a happy medium would be great. I don't mind advertising."

The model they are using is what's been done to Fenway Park. The changes could double the size of advertising to 45,000 square feet.

The planning commission will vote on the proposed changes in about a week, on July 18.
