Lockport man charged with attacking sleeping boy with shovel

LEMONT, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

After attending a party Friday night, a southwest suburban man attacked a sleeping 10-year-old boy and his father with a shovel, according to police.

Nathan Hiatt, 29, struck the sleeping boy with a metal fireplace shovel about 1 a.m. Saturday in a home in the 15100 block of 131st Street in an unincorporated area near Lemont, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The boy's father, 36, woke up when the boy started screaming and shielded him from further blows, a statement from the sheriff's office said. Hiatt, a Lockport resident, then ran out the back door.

The homeowner woke up, saw the blood and called 911, sheriff's police said. Responding deputies found Hiatt under a tree.

The man and his son were treated and released from an area hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

Hiatt, the boy and his father had attended a Friday night "get together" hosted by the homeowner, but the sheriff's office said a motive for the attack remains unclear.

Hiatt was charged Saturday with two counts of aggravated battery and ordered held on a $250,000 bond Sunday. He remains in the Cook County Jail and will be back in court Tuesday in Bridgeview, according to police.
