Several good Samaritans helped rescue an Elgin man after strong currents pushed his boat over a Fox River dam Saturday evening in the northwest suburb.
Mariano Valencia, 43, had already been pulled to shore by several onlookers when emergency crews arrived to the Kimball Street dam at 6:36 p.m., according to a release from Elgin fire officials.
He later told authorities he was in a small inflatable boat when the strong current took him past warning buoys, under the bridge and over the dam, the release said.
Valencia, of Elgin, was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and refused further medical treatment, the release said. A fisherman later pulled the inflatable boat out of the river.
Elgin Fire Department officials remind everyone to wear a personal floatation device while onboard any watercraft, and obey posted warnings near the dam.
