CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting of a 5-year-old boy early Friday at a South Side park.

Jaden Donald was with his mother and three siblings at Cooper Park, 11712 S. Ada St., in the West Pullman neighborhood when shots rang out about 12:40 a.m., according to police and family.

A male suspect is in custody late Friday, according to a police source.

Realizing the boy had been hit, the boy's mother Jasmine Donald lifted his shirt and saw he had been shot in the stomach, she told reporters gathered outside Advocate Christ Medical Center Friday morning.

After the shooting, the mother took her son to Metro South Medical Center, Jasmine Donald said. Jaden was then transferred to Christ where he underwent surgery.

The boy will be monitored during the coming hours to determine if he needs more surgery, said Andrew Holmes, a community activist who is working with the family.

Jaden was one of three people who were shot in the park, but his injuries were the most severe, police said.

Another bullet struck a 34-year-old man in the right wrist, police said. He was taken to Metro South Medical Center.

A third shooting victim, a 28-year-old man who was hit by a bullet in the left shin, was also taken to Metro South Medical Center. He was listed in stable condition.
