Remembering Travis Turbyfill

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -

Edward and Loretta Hoffman shared a moment of mourning with members of the U.S. forest service -- the men and women who worked the very mountainsides their grandson did.

"We found out immediately because one of the chiefs was standing there and I asked him and he said the name, that he had a list -- I said Travis and he said Turbyfill.. so we knew," said Loretta.

27-year-old Travis Turbyfill, a member of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots -- one of the 19 who lost their lives battling the Yarnell Hill fire on Sunday, June 30.

Turbyfill was also a proud Marine, a husband and father of two young girls. He was the only grandson to Ed and Loretta -- both heartbroken by the loss of a such a young, brave man.

"So proud of him.  He was just a great kid," said Ed.

"It's beyond belief, just beyond belief," said Loretta.

The Hoffmans tell us that Travis followed in his grandfather's footsteps -- who was also a Prescott firefighter.

"He just he went and did it.. he didn't even ask. He started taking classes at the college and volunteering and got on the strike force here the hot shot crew. He was just happy as a lark," said Ed.

The grandparents stood in silence Wednesday morning, admiring the memorial in front of Station 7 where the young firefighter was based -- proud so many others are able to recognize the hero Travis was.
