National Weather Service issues beach hazard alert

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The National Weather Service issued an alert Tuesday morning, warning residents about dangerous conditions at area beaches.

According to the beach hazards statement, Lake Michigan beaches could see "dangerous pounding waves" and "life-threatening rip currents" that could pull swimmers away from shore and into deep waters.

Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water.

Strong northerly or northeasterly winds could create waves between three and six feet high, according to the weather service.

The advisory is in effect for Lake and Cook counties in Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana until late Tuesday night.
