Braves tip their hats to Georgia's troops

ATLANTA -

It was a big day at Turner Field for Georgia troops and their families on Sunday. Patriotism was on display during the 3rd annual Tribute to the Troops. The event is an opportunity for Georgia leaders, Braves players and fans to thank those who service in the military.

FOX Sports South partnered with the Atlanta Braves to host more than 150 military personnel from Ft. Benning and the Georgia National Guard. The hometown heroes got the red carpet treatment, literally.

The Tribute to the Troops helps benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Governor Nathan Deal was in attendance along with the First Lady Sandra Deal. The couple joined Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and other dignitaries in welcoming the group to the ball park and express their gratitude.

Special recognition was given to Wounded Warrior Project's Dan Nevins during a pre-game reception. The retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant had his daughter, Private Karyssa Nevins, by his side. He was injured in 2004 while serving in Iraq when an Improvised Explosive Device detonated beneath his vehicle while on a combat mission. Nevins lost both his legs below the knees and suffered traumatic brain injury.

The Wounded Warrior Project was instrumental in helping Nevins overcome his physical and emotional challenges during his recovery.

Just before the game, troops took to the field to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from Braves players and fans.

Sunday's event included messages from soldiers stationed overseas for their family and friends back home.
