Local wig business gets bad reviews online

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Wigs are a big, big business these days.  Many top stars wear them, and now everyday women want the look, too.  Lots of web sites have popped up offering the latest styles, and the kind that are made with real human hair. And, as you can imagine, those are very expensive.

But there is a local company making an online splash for its bad reviews, and the complaints have come from as far away as Dubai.  People from around the world will buy online to get a wig from American outlets.  They're known to generally be high quality and beautiful, but in the case of a local company, things are getting ugly.

Ines Hooper gave the FOX 5 I-Team a behind-the-scenes tour of her favorite wig shop.   She works at FOX 5 News, and is known to sport a new, hot look every day. Her enthusiasm for wigs is infectious.

But many people don't have the access to in-person shopping.  No problem.  Just go online to Vixen Lace Wigs and you can browse wigs ranging in price from $30 to hundreds of dollars.

Valerie Abwavo says she ordered a wig for a friend in Dubai. Her girlfriend went to the trouble to send money to the United States because she wanted an American-made wig, and Vixen Lace Wigs out of Atlanta stocked-- at least online-- some of the best.

But after paying nearly $378 back in April, she's stuck looking at a picture.  The seller, she says, has not shipped the wig.

"All the times I communicate with them, there's always this, there's always that," Abwavo said.  "Or sometimes they put you on hold, then tell you they'll call you tomorrow, then they don't call."

And there are very similar tales pouring into the Better Business Bureau, which has now catalogued more than 100 complaints and given the business a "F" rating.  Even on YouTube, the wig shop has its critics.  One woman who uses the online name "Charm" reviews Vixen Lace Wigs.  Her experience? "Not so good," she says.  It took too long to get it and she says the wig was damaged.

"When it came, it came in a grocery bag," she said.  "Uh, hello! Good morning!"

The I-Team tried to say 'hello' ourselves, but no one was at the business location, so we tried another address.  No one answered there either.  We even called the toll-free number, but we were never able to see someone.

Valerie Abwavo got someone on the other end too, and finally said, "I quit!"  Her friend will just have to find beauty from someone else.   She says she thinks she just needs her money back, but she's still waiting.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
