ATLANTA -

The family of a Florida A&M drum major who died in a hazing incident says the school is reinstating the band too soon.

On Thursday, Florida A&M University's interim president said  he was lifting the suspension of its famous Marching 100 band about a year and a half after Robert Champion's death.

Champion collapsed and died when fellow band members beat him after a football game in Orlando.

Authorities have charged 14 former band members in the case.

Champion's mother, Pam, says the university has put profit over safety by letting the band back on the field.

"When you look at the history, their decision in putting the band on the field knowing years after years of what -- the problems they had in the band, they took the steps of putting the band on the field anyway for the dollar, so you really have to -- there is no other way to think about the fact that you are putting dollar value over student's value," Pam Champion said.

Florida A&M says it has made several changes to stop hazing in the band. The changes include a zero tolerance policy and new academic requirements for band members.
